We are asked this question often, and it is a good one. The titles get used interchangeably in common conversation, and in parts of India the practical distinction is not always visible to the person hiring. Choosing the wrong type of professional for your project, or hiring one when you actually need both, costs time and sometimes money.
Here is a clear explanation of what each role actually covers, where they overlap, and how to decide which professional, or combination of professionals, your project needs.
What an architect is qualified to do
In India, a registered architect has completed a five-year professional degree and is registered with the Council of Architecture. Architects are legally permitted to sign and submit drawings to municipal authorities for building approvals. They are trained in structural systems, building services such as electrical, plumbing, and HVAC, fire safety standards, accessibility requirements, and the technical aspects of construction from foundation to roof.
If you are building a new home from the ground up, or making structural changes to an existing one, adding a floor, removing load-bearing walls, or changing the building footprint, you need a registered architect involved. Architects are also trained to think about how a building performs on its specific site: its orientation relative to the sun and prevailing wind, its relationship to neighbouring buildings, its thermal behaviour across different seasons. These decisions shape how the building works for decades.
What an interior designer is qualified to do
An interior designer focuses on the experience of the internal space. This covers space planning and furniture layouts, material selection for floors, walls, and ceilings, lighting design, colour and texture, furniture specification, and the overall atmosphere of the interior environment. A trained interior designer will often hold a degree in interior design or a related field, but they are not necessarily registered architects and are typically not authorised to submit structural drawings for municipal approvals.
Interior design is also a broad field with genuine specialisations. The skills and sensibility required for a luxury private home are quite different from those needed for a boutique restaurant, a corporate office, or a retail space. When hiring, look for a portfolio that demonstrates relevant experience in the type of project you are planning, not just impressive work in a different category.
Where the two roles overlap in practice
In India, many architecture studios, including VOAD, practice both architecture and interior design as a continuous service. This is common and practical: the transition from designing a building to designing its interior environment is a natural one when the same studio handles both. The alternative, where the architect and interior designer are different people working in sequence, requires careful coordination to avoid decisions that conflict with each other, particularly around structural element positions, services routing, and the location of fixed joinery.
At VOAD, Ar. Vivek Bosmiya works across both disciplines, which means the design thinking is continuous from the building's structure to the finish of the floor you walk on. There is no hand-off between the architectural and interior phase, no coordination gap, and no moment where the interior design has to work around architectural decisions it was not part of.
When you need an architect, when you need an interior designer, and when you need both
For new construction or structural renovation, you need a registered architect. For interior fit-out of an existing space without structural changes, an interior designer can lead the project, with technical input from an architect on specific matters if needed. For projects that involve both building work and interior specification, a studio that offers both services under one roof will typically deliver a more coherent result and require less coordination effort from the client.
The questions people ask most often
Can my interior designer prepare my building plans? In India, only a Council of Architecture-registered architect can sign and submit plans for municipal approval. An interior designer may be skilled at space planning within an existing structure but cannot legally submit new building drawings unless they hold an architecture qualification and registration. Ask directly about this before hiring.
Can my architect choose my furniture and finishes? Many architects in India also handle interior design, but not all architects are comfortable with or trained in the detailed decisions of material sourcing, furniture specification, and finish selection. Ask specifically whether interior design is included in the architect's scope, and what that scope covers in practice.
Do I genuinely need both? For most residential projects that involve building new or making substantial structural changes, you benefit most from a studio where architecture and interior design are handled together from the start. If you want to talk through which approach suits your specific project, speak to us at VOAD. We are happy to advise without any obligation on your part.
